Tottenham won 1-0 in the 35th round of the English Premier League (EPL) in the 2022-2023 season against Crystal Palace held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England on the 6th at 11:00 pm (Korean time). Tottenham (17 wins, 6 draws, 12 losses, 57 points) moved up one notch to 6th place.

The incident occurred when Son Heung-min was replaced in the 44th minute of the second half. Crystal Palace fans made eye-tearing gestures towards Son Heung-min, which meant racism to disparage Asians. Some fans were known to mock Son Heung-min by raising his middle finger.

It is a racial discrimination case that broke out again in just a few days. Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler (77) made racist remarks to Son Heung-min while commentating on the match between Tottenham and Liverpool on the 1st. He said “I do martial arts” when Son Heung-min used his hand in the process of blocking Liverpool’s Cody Hagpo in the 7th minute of the second half. It is an expression that demeans Asians.

The Tottenham club also announced a hard response to racial discrimination against Son Heung-min. Tottenham said on the club website on the 7th, “We know that Son Heung-min suffered racial discrimination in the match against Crystal Palace. Discrimination of any kind is unacceptable in our club. We will take strong action at the club level.”
